Visit York at Christmas

York is a perfect place to visit at Christmas.  There are so many wonderful things to do in York from the fabulous York Christmas Market, to the other many Christmas events in and around the city where you can sample festive afternoon teas or take the children to visit Santa.

The narrow Medieval streets in York feel wonderfully Dickensian, and you can feel like you have walked right into the pages of A Christmas Carol.  If you get chance take a trip to the York Castle Museum where you can see the play itself with Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and little Tiny Tim, before taking a stroll down the recreated Victorian Street.

There are several theatres in York where you can see traditional pantomimes in all their kitsch glory!  The Grand Opera House has TV and Pop stars while the Theatre Royal has had the same slapstick cast for the last thirty years.

You can join in with a carol service at the magnificent York Minster or partake in a festive Afternoon Tea at the world-famous Betty’s Tea Rooms.  If you are looking for something a little quirky, consider taking the kids to visit Santa on a Santa cruise along the Ouse.

If you venture out of the city for the day you could visit Santa at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming or take a trip to Castle Howard where you will see the house decorated in all its Christmas splendour.  If activities are more your thing, call in at Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland for ice skating and a vintage fun fair before heading to the café with it’s fur lined benches for cake and hot chocolate.

Whatever you decide to do, a visit to York is like going back to a simpler, merrier time.  Have a fabulous time, and Merry Christmas!
