What’s on at Eden’s Festival of Christmas 2019?

A glittering chorus of some of Cornwall’s finest musicians will be the star attraction at the Eden Project’s Christmas celebrations this year.

The cast of 21 musicians will play three shows every evening of the celebration, in what will be the biggest Christmas music programme at Eden.

They will work together to create festive sets, inspired by the surroundings of the Mediterranean Biome. The music will be instantly recognisable and evocative of family Christmases.

Father Christmas and his elves will be making their much-anticipated return to Eden, hunkering down in their cosy grotto in Eden’s arena for the Christmas season.

This year, as part of a new show, they will be welcoming a very special guest to Eden. She is a crucial part of the Christmas story and Father Christmas couldn’t do his job without her!

The Rainforest Biome will be beautifully lit, with a specially-created shadow puppet show, interactive shadow play activities and UV light suit performances.

A collection of beautiful willow lanterns, modelled on some of our planet’s most majestic and precious creatures, will light up the Biomes.

In the Mediterranean Biome, artist Luke Jerram’s hauntingly beautiful work Gaia Earth will be suspended over the citrus grove.

Gaia Earth is a detailed representation of planet Earth, as if viewed from space. It is designed to show the beauty and fragility of our home planet and communicate the urgent need to look after it.

Eden will also be creating a spectacular Avenue of Lights, leading to the entrance to the Biomes.

There will be a giant Christmas tree, a music pavilion featuring brass band performances, and mulled wine available to buy.

In an upcycling first for Eden, there will a Christmas jumper swap shop in which Eden visitors can exchange their spare Yuletide woollens for something new.

Visitors will also be able to make a pledge to the planet in Eden’s family photobooth with a twist. They can have their fun family photo taken – complete with comical Christmas props – while adding their pledge to a blackboard full of promises. Pictures will then be uploaded to Eden’s social media so visitors can tag and share.

Eden’s storytellers will be creating a programme of unique Yuletide tales as well as performing a cast of Christmas characters that will pop up across Eden. Craft workshops will also be taking place during the season.

Eden’s ever-popular ice-rink – the only indoor rink in Cornwall – will be open for the duration of the season, with general skating sessions as well as lessons, family fun sessions and special skate-free toddler ice play sessions.

Tamsyn Lewis, Eden’s Senior Programme Lead, said: “Festival of Christmas at Eden will be our most glittering, sparkly, joyful, fun, cosy and uplifting ever. Eden will resonate to the sound of Christmas music and the unmistakable smell of mulled wine will scent the air. Father Christmas will have a surprise special guest – and everyone will have the chance to trade in that embarrassing Christmas jumper they’ve never worn!”

The full Festival of Christmas programme takes place on selected evenings from November 30 and all activities, with the exception of Father Christmas and ice-skating, are included in Eden admission.

Father Christmas sessions are bookable and take place during the day and some early evenings during weekends from November 30 to December 15. From December 18 to Christmas Eve there are sessions every day.

Relaxed sessions for children with autism spectrum condition, sensory and communications needs or learning disabilities who may benefit from a more informal experience are also available to book.

Eden’s ice rink is open daily throughout the Christmas season.
