What’s on in Chester at Christmas 2019?

Chester’s landmarks provide a fun theme for a unique set of gift wrap and greetings cards specially commissioned for Christmas by Visit Cheshire. The Eastgate Clock, medieval cathedral and Christmas Market cabins feature on the seasonal stationery, which is on sale now at Chester tourist information centre and at visitcheshire.com.

Gingerbread people also appear in the design to mark the launch of Chester as Britain’s gingerbread city at Christmas time. Sculptures of city icons including the Grosvenor Hotel will be among eye-catching sights constructed from this favourite seasonal biscuit by local businesses. And shops will compete for the best gingerbread window display.

Chester at Christmas 2019

A giant chain of gingerbread figures created by local children will be hung across the city. And a Gingerbread Village (16 November-22 December, ) will provide an inspiring space for children to join in storytelling and craft sessions, with money raised donated to charity.

Fifty firs with gingerbread decorations made by locals will go on display in the cloisters of Chester Cathedral (from 30 Nov, ). Gingerbread will be one of the treats on sale, too, at Chester Christmas Market (16 Nov-22 Dec), where 70 stalls will offer plenty of ideas for stocking fillers and presents.

Other highlights of the season will include a production of the classic fairytale Peter Pan at Storyhouse
(6 Dec-12 Jan, ) and The Lanterns return to Chester Zoo this year, featuring nine fantastical worlds populated by illuminated wildlife characters (22 Nov-23 Dec, ). The Grosvenor Museum is giving its Period House a Christmas makeover, too, to show how the people of Chester have celebrated the season during the past 350 years (1-31 Dec).
